This project is a total breeze, even if you’re new to crafting, and it’s so much fun to see it come together in under an hour. Grab your supplies and let’s get started on this perfect Patriotic / 4th of July decoration!
Step 1: Prepare Wooden Slats
Select five wooden slats of uniform size. These can be wide craft sticks, jumbo popsicle sticks, or thin paint stir sticks. Lightly sand any rough edges or splinters to ensure a smooth surface for applying paper or fabric.

Step 2: Assemble the Star Base
Arrange the five prepared wooden slats into a large five-point star shape. Carefully overlap the ends, ensuring the structure looks balanced and sturdy. Use a hot glue gun to securely adhere all overlapping points. For added strength, reinforce the back of the star with small craft stick pieces glued perpendicularly across the joints if needed, ensuring the star holds its shape.

Step 3: Measure & Cut Paper/Fabric
Choose a variety of patriotic scrapbook papers or fabrics (e.g., navy stars, red gingham, red polka dots, cream stripes, vintage star print). Lay each wooden slat on top of a chosen pattern, trace its outline with a pencil, and carefully cut out the paper/fabric pieces. Aim for neatly trimmed edges that match the slat’s shape.

Step 4: Apply Paper/Fabric to Slats
Apply a thin, even layer of Mod Podge or craft glue to the surface of one wooden slat. Carefully position and press the corresponding patriotic paper or fabric piece onto the slat. Smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles using your fingers or a craft brayer. Repeat this process for all five slats, using a different pattern for each to create a festive, varied look.

Step 5: Seal and Protect
Once all paper/fabric pieces are securely adhered and the glue is dry, apply a generous topcoat of Mod Podge over the entire paper-covered surface of the star. This will seal the paper, protect it from wear, and give it a finished, cohesive look. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely according to package instructions.

Step 6: Distress for Rustic Finish
After the Mod Podge is thoroughly dry and cured, lightly sand the edges and corners of each slat with fine-grit sandpaper. This creates a distressed, vintage farmhouse 4th of July style, making the craft look charmingly aged and handmade.

Step 7: Create & Attach Center Bow
Gather a generous amount of raffia ribbon and tie it into a rustic bow. Position the raffia bow at the very center of the star, covering the overlapping point where the slats meet. Secure it firmly with a dab of hot glue.

Step 8: Embellish the Center
Choose a small rusty metal star, wooden star, or gold star embellishment. Apply a small amount of hot glue to the back of the embellishment and carefully press it onto the middle of the raffia bow, ensuring it’s centered and secure.

Step 9: Add Hanger (Optional)
If you wish to hang your star, cut a small length of jute twine and form a loop. Hot glue the ends of the loop securely to the back of the top point of the star. Allow the glue to dry completely before hanging.
